Window Turned Craft Ribbon Display.

For Thrifty Thursday, I wanted to share a display idea that literally cost me less than $5.  As you may know, I am redoing a guest room into a more convenient craft area.  In my former space I had my ribbons on three of these rods (extension rods that work with spring pressure to stay put) in a shelf.

When I hauled the pressure rods with the ribbon upstairs, I worried about the amount of wall space they would take, and the need to hang some kind of shelves to put them in.  Then it dawned on me that one of the windows was sealed shut, and would work great.  I took down the curtain and found it looked too naked, and worried that the room with lights on would be too visible from outside at night.  I mean do I really want 'my great craft secrets' reveled?  As you can see I cut up the lace curtain I had hanging in the other window in the room and stapled some of the lace to the inside of the window frame to provide some privacy and also to add a background for the ribbon.

My total expense was two additional rods, (about $4.50) since I had to shorten the three I had, to fit in the window.
Here are a few other displays that are in place.  I loved this wood and wire birdcage style CD shelving when I saw it at a church rummage sale a couple of weeks ago.  Painted blue it perks up the corner and allows additional storage.  These cute little tupperwarish containers from the dollar store were the perfect size.
Of course repurposing is my middle name, so I was tickled when I thought to use this old clock case I made and have had for years, to hold my fancy antique condiment bottles which now hold glass glitter.  I am a few shy, so I will be on the lookout, but isn't it fun to have something to look for when you are junking?

With the lace curtains that once hung in front of the blinds gone, I wanted something whimsical to use as a header that would give a pop of color.  This old cutter quilt was perfect.  I plan to used the rest of it to do a pennant banner on the other side of the room to tie both sides together.
Another piece of storage shelving holds my patterned tapes and some left over ribbon.  I love the double tiered wire display on top that my friend Cathie found for me, and scooped up at a second hand store.  I can't wait until I figure what great craft supply items to store in it.
And last, but not least.  As part of my craft room I want to include artistic ventures I have been gifted or collected or made.  This sweet fairy nest was a gift from my friend Jenn last year.  It has hung in my kitchen all this time, because it makes me smile, even though it was totally the wrong color and mood for the room.  Sometimes you just gotta break the rules, but now I believe it has found the perfect home as an expression of artistry that will inspire me in my future crafting ventures.

Thanks to you for coming along and sharing the adventure that building a craft room is turning out to be, and a special thanks to my gracious friend Cathie for listening to me endlessly plotting and planning its design.

  2. What a darling idea! Love your green and white floor too. I love home tours and try to go when I hear about them. We occasionally have them in our old historic neighborhood here in Kaysville. Would you be interested in visiting the next one? Enjoyed your post on Just A Bed of Roses. I'm working there when Joni and Brenda need a break now. Mimi
