A Down Cushion with a Hand Stitched Welt.

Ah snowy soft down ... all over my craft room, on my shirt, in my hair ...  That was the scene today as I made a cushion for my wicker love seat to be used in my garden house.

My granddaughter Beckie spent part of the day with me, I am teaching her to love antiques and Jane Austen.  Did you notice that she has a scrap of the sheet I used for the cushion in her lap.  I used the wrong side, to give it a more faded look.  I want the cottage to be in tones of whites and tans, and this sweet tiny rose print is mostly white, but very feminine.

To make the cushion, I first laid the fabric on the seat of the wicker love seat and traced the shape.  Then I doubled the fabric and traced two inches out from the shape of the seat and cut.  This is to allow for the seams, and then for the hand stitched welt.  Next I cut a 6 inch wide gusset for the sides of the cushion.  Of course a good inch and a half of that will go into the seams and the welt.   In this picture you can see I have just started the welt.  (Note the escaped feathers and down on the floor, boy is that a messy procedure.)

... and here it is in the garden house ... I love it when things turn out as you envision them.  It won't be long now before I will be having tea parties ...

with boiling water in the pot, cream in the creamer, biscuits under the dome and tea in the cup ...  can hardly wait!

  1. I'm late to discovering your blog, but better late than never. Your granddaughter it such a cutie! And your loveseat turned out so pretty. AND, what a wonderful garden house!!! I love it and immediately I notice the windows wall. I had to go search for posts about that and was pleased to find one. Such a wonderfully creative idea. I was trying to figure out how those windows are being held up...I can't figure it out, but don't worry, I won't ask. LOL But I do so want one of those garden houses in my yard!

    1. Well, it is still a work in progress. I originally planned to have it be all windows, even the roof, but then I wanted something archetectural, thus the solid back wall and the fireplace. Then my dh reminded me I didn't want a glass roof, as there would be no shade for luncheons ... he was right ... anyway, its a house built up normally with the sides open, then the side walls are old windows held together by long diagnal screws. Pretty simple really. Hope you get yours someday... I have been saving windows for mine for five years.

  3. Your cushion cover looks like a well worn sheet. Love it! And it's best to teach those grandbabies at an early age to appreciate vintage. She's adorable.
