Cemetary Stroll

I have the opportunity to take a walk a couple of times a week with my friend Ginny.  Its about a mile to our local cemetery and its very peaceful there as the sun comes up.  The three stones to the right belong to the family that built our historic home.

There are a lot of Dixons here in Payson, and this marker heads the Dixon portion of the cemetery.

Ginny is a genealogy buff and found out that she has family who is buried here in Payson, though she grew up in Washington state.  The child's broken head stone below belongs to a family member as well.

She and I have decided that come spring we will do a fund raiser to raise money to have the broken stone placed in cement, like the one to the right ... there are several old stones of this vintage which have broken over time.
Did you know that cemeteries are a favorite haunt of birders?  I didn't, but its been fun to find out more about birds from them ... owls are evidently a favorite in ours.

I just wanted to finish up by showing this large and ornate monument, its probably the largest in our grounds.    I  love cemeteries with old dimensional markers, when we were in Paris, they were some of my favorite sites to visit ... such amazing and charming statuary.

So do you find cemeteries to be creepy or peaceful?

  1. I find American Fork Cemetery to be a peaceful and lovely place...but I am biased. I was on the Cemetery Committee for over 10 years and wrote the scripts for our History and Heritage Pageant. Alpine Cemetery...on the other hand...is creepy at the top of the hill. I can't visit there without prickles at the back of my neck.

    1. I drive by the AF cemetary fairly often, and it is vry charming, I love the wall that surrounds it. Now I have to find the one in Alpine, I am curious.

  3. I find cemeteries to be peaceful. I am also into genealogy and there is so much history in each and every stone....like that child's that you want to fix.
Most of my family is buried in a small town in Wisconsin and my paternal great grandparents do not have any marker, I am going to be sure they do as soon as I can afford it. No one should be forgotten like that....we all matter...:) By the way, that is a beautiful cemetery.

    1. Thank you Sandy, I think so too. My father is buried in a modern cemetary with flat markers the mowers can mow right over ... I find it very sterile ... this one is just charming.

  4. What beautiful pictures. You captured the mood really well. I find cemetaries to be both peaceful, yet creepy at times...it depends on my mood. Is it wrong to say how stunning that large monument is on your last picture. It's really something else! xo

  5. I find cemetaries to be fascinating. It's not a peaceful or frightening feeling. It's more like a sense of being with those who came before me. I don't have to even know who they were. I lived in Connecticut for 4 years and found very old cemetaries. One was just behind the apt. complex I lived it. I used to take my (then 2 year old) to walk among the headstones. I lived in Hawaii for 2 years and we visited ethnic Chinese cemetaries, which were ornate and above ground. I agree with Pollyanna...the cemetaries in WA state state are also sterile...ground height headstones for easy mowing. Occasional old, old cemetaries, but not as old as the east coast. My sons, to this day, still find time to visit cemetaries. I have buried my parents and grandparents, so now I actually can visit some of those I know.
