Vine Street Antiques and Subway Art

Life's been crazy lately, have I mentioned that my DH and I are Landlords? In the last two weeks we have helped prepare a house for rent, an apartment for rent and a condo for rent (thank heavens for our kids!!)  Today I met with a realtor about selling a house ... phew!  Just glad I got to sneak out afterwards and do some serious junking!!

I got to stop at my favorite antique mall in Salt Lake City, Vine Street Antiques.  This booth is fairly new and I have had a chance to watch it sort of develop.  Pretty charming, all in all.  The Subway art side table above uses Salt Lake City streets, including Vine Street for which this antique mall is named!!  I love it!!

I really like her industrial adaptations.  Isn't the pallet wall fun?  She really has a great eye,  the garland below is just the sweetest, simplest thing.

She has an unusual array of pillows too.  Some from table clothes, and others just fun and funky.  Love her industrial cart, just wish IT was for sale, but what a great display.

Of course its always fun to see how Marci has tweaked her Steam Punk booth, shown below.

She is just back from a buying trip and is going to be redoing her Frenchy booth, can't wait to get back to SLC and take some pictures of that to share.  She is such an incredible decorator!!

She also has some Subway art.  In this case its a sign, gotta love it .... though this one appears to be New York City Streets, though I am sure we have all those street in SLC, its just that none of them are famous here .... Isn't there a Hudson Street in Sugarhouse?

And if you are looking for the perfectly cool metal industrial bit for a project, Marci may just have what you are looking for!!

Thanks for coming along on my diversionary junking jaunt!!

Trash to Treasure - French Laundry Press

Well, I just finished up a great weekend, filled with dinner dates with friends, lunch with my daughters and lots and lots of work.  I spent much of my free time getting an apartment ready for rent, but there is one good thing that came of that .... the empty apartment gave me a warm spot to paint this tall cupboard. I really miss being able to paint furniture over the winter ... but spring is almost here!

This is how the cupboard looked when I found it at an estate sale.  The door was broken, and whatever was originally in the window was missing.  My DH repaired the door, and I filled the splintered wood with wood putty.

First I deglossed the mahogany finish, as it was still in pretty good shape and new paint would not have stayed put.  Then I filled the window with a diamond shaped mesh.
Last of all I transferred this great French Clothier's signage onto the front of the door.  It mentions all kinds of French unmentionables, and I thought the cupboard would be perfect for someone to use as a lingerie cupboard ... of course it could also be used as a linen press!

As usual, I am indebted to Graphics Fairy for the great signage.  Karen has a remarkable selection of various French business signs, labels, logos and letterheads, all of which look great on painted furniture.  I am still trying to decide if I should rough it up a bit to give it some 'age' and patina?  What do you think?

Thanks for coming along to check out my latest reinvention project!

Reinvented Bunny in a Basket!

So, anyone who has ever seen my craft room, knows that it is crammed with all kinds of bits and pieces of, well, who knows what.  The little basket below was a bright and brassy holder, that may have held a jam jar or candy dish once upon a time.  When I found it, it had potential, but for what?

With Easter coming early this year and a sunny, warmish kind of day today, I started thinking bunnies and chicks.

... and after seeing this sweet spring picture at Graphics Fairy, I decided to recreate the scene in my basket.  After a light wash of pale pink paint,  a hand full of dyed sphagnum moss, and some  scattered mercury glass beads for color, I cut out the bunny and chicks I had printed on card stock, and placed them in their not so new home... and voila a whimsical reinvented basket!!
